PC 7424, "Use 5 inch Pad Only"???

The 7424 says to "Use 5 inch Pad Only". Can I use 6.5in pads? What are the cons of doing so or not getting a 6" backing plate?

Re: PC 7424, "Use 5 inch Pad Only"???

It's the matter of the counter weight. People have changed it to use the 6" BP and others have not. From my understanding it's a matter of vibration.
I purchased the 7336 (it's the same machine but w/ a CW for a 6" BP).

Re: PC 7424, "Use 5 inch Pad Only"???

The only thing that I have noticed using 5 in. backing plate on a larger pad will provide excessive wear on the pads from the topside if pressure is applied. I use a six inch backing plate on my PC all the time. I also use 7.5 inch pads a lot. Mostly because I use my rotary from time to time.

Re: PC 7424, "Use 5 inch Pad Only"???

icic.

Which 6" backing plate should I use? What about this

Porter-Cable Backing Pads, Polishing Pads & Counterweights

or these

Hook And Loop Backing Plates feature Velcro brand hook & loop fasteners to hold foam pads in place. lake country backing plate, lake country foam

If I get the 6" backing plate, do I need a counter weight as well?

Re: PC 7424, "Use 5 inch Pad Only"???

like cw , I use a 5" counterweight , a six inch backing plate and 7.5" pads ...not much vibration vs the 6" counterweight (have used them side by side) and i use the VC pads that have a hard and molded backing so there has been no wear in over 4 years of use

it depends where you buy it ...if you get it at Home Depot , then no backing plate ..get it from DetailCity.com or Autogeek.net and I'm pretty sure it does ...

Re: PC 7424, "Use 5 inch Pad Only"???

I got from a local person, brand new though. I'm guessing not, since I see nothing that looks like one lol.

Also,

Saw this on the AG site

# The Flexible Backing Plate LC-43-125DA measures 5 Inches in Diameter and is perfect for pads up to 7.5”.

# The Flexible Backing Plate LC-43-148DA measures 6 Inches in Diameter and is perfect for pads 7.5" up to 8.5”.

So should I get the 5" BP? I'm going to be using 6.5" pads...Confusing

I use a 6" BP w/ 6-1/2" pads. I personally like the flexible BP.
You just don't want the BP to beyond the edges of the pad.

Edit: It says this on the main page

All of our Flexible Dual Action Backing Plates offer these outstanding features:

# VELCRO® brand hook & loop fasteners molded into the polyurethane to prevent separation while polishing

Does that mean it supports velcro type pads?

Re: PC 7424, "Use 5 inch Pad Only"???

Some people prefer the 5 inch backing plate with 5 or 5.5 inch pads as they seem to correct a bit better than the larger 6.5 inch pads with a 6 inch backing plate.

Re: PC 7424, "Use 5 inch Pad Only"???

Folks seem to get better correction out of 5" pads on a PC anyway. Less bogging. Sorry for posting in such an old thread. I didn't realize.
