I don't necessarily know if it's a problem or not. Maybe it's normal. Of course, it seems like people are sort of mute on the issue (vendors) and the one person talking to me about seems to think I am an incompetent (at least that's what I've gathered so far).
It has not affected the machine's performance, but I do wonder about possible short life if it is a problem.

Just to give you guys some objective "evidence" on just how hot my Flex is getting, here is some photo proof. This reading was "average" - however, it takes the Fluke thermometer a few minutes to reach a correct reading from what I could gather in the manual. By that time, I am thinking the Flex housing could have cooled by 5-10 degrees. I had a few higher and a few lower readings. I have no idea what the normal operating temp is for this kind of machine, either.
I used the Flex at speeds 4-5, very little pressure on the machine. Before using I did take the backing plate off and oiled the felt ring. FWIW, I don't think this had any effect on the heat issue, be it positive or negative.

IIRC, that was the backing plate rubbing against something, not the machine itself. A few members had that issue, but it is supposed to be resolved now.

Interesting. I don't have any experience with the Flex, but if it really is your estimated 140 to 145 degrees, that does sound pretty high. Especially since you aren't working it that hard. Did you try to contact Flex directly, since you aren't being helped properly?

Well, I am not sure it is even a problem. Getting an answer to that is what I would like. I guess I could call Flex - I thought possibly someone might know via the boards, be it a vendor or another Flex user that has already had this question answered.

"An adult will experience a significant injury of the skin after 1 minute of exposure to water at 127 degrees, 30 seconds of exposure at 130 degrees, and 2 seconds of exposure at 150 degrees."
Found that little tidbit - however, it relates to immersion burns in water. Probably not applicable to what I am wondering about. I have been searching the net for operating temperature ranges for various power tools with no success.

I have not noticed the heat in my PC but I have one of those IR temperature guns I will try to remember to check it the next time I polish with it.
I would like to see someone use one on a Flex to get a actual temp after working it.
